Technology

Our microfluidics-based blood chemistry device is derived from aerospace technology. After five years of rigorous ground testing, the Pointcare™ M analyzer has been deployed on the Chinese space station (launched in 2022) to provide daily blood chemistry testing for astronauts in orbit.

The analyzer is a portable blood chemistry analyzer equipped with a spectrophotometric detection system. Its optical system consists of a xenon arc stroboscopic lamp and a beam-splitter/detector capable of reading nine wavelengths. A built-in heating module maintains the chamber temperature at 37 ± 0.2°C during the reaction phase.

The reagent disc, manufactured using microfluidic technology, is a single-use consumable with a diameter of approximately 8 cm. It fully integrates all necessary diluents and dry reagents required for a test panel. The disc contains multiple reaction cuvettes designed to receive diluted samples. These cuvettes feature varying pathlengths to accommodate different reagent sensitivities and analyte concentrations. During manufacturing, pre-measured, lyophilized reagent beads for each specific test are pre-loaded into the cuvettes.

To perform a test, the operator simply loads approximately 100 μL of sample directly into the disc. During analysis, the analyzer utilizes centrifugal and capillary forces to automatically meter and separate the sample, mix the fluids, and distribute the fluid into the reaction cuvettes, where it reacts with the pre-loaded reagents.

The analyzer simultaneously monitors the reactions using nine wavelengths, calculates the results from the absorbance data, and reports the results on the screen and via a convenient built-in thermal printer.
